For all too many of us, going to Mass on Sundays and other days has become more or less routine. Many of us simply run on “auto pilot,” responding, singing, changing postures, and saying and doing many other things without even thinking. This can be good because it frees our minds to focus on God and pray so we don’t have to think about every little thing. This “auto pilot” approach can also be bad because it can hamper our ability to enter deeply into the mystery being celebrated.
These two sessions will explore the many actions, postures, and objects that are part and parcel of our current revised Eucharistic Rite. Some of what we do and use have been part of Mass from almost the very beginning. Other elements of what we do and use have been added over the years, some of which are no longer meaningful. Sorting this out is an interesting and informative undertaking!
